Yes, once upon a time... we all grow up with stories. They
have a beginning, a middle, and most have endings. I think
I agree with some writers that the memories we create, make
stories last in our minds and hearts. Do you have a few
memorable stories to tell?
You Can Write a Story Ad or Article!
If you use a story ad, put your call to action after you
tell the story. Tell people exactly what to do. "Now that
you know about this story, I want you to get or buy or
visit??" Then hand them the benefits that they'll get by
taking that particular action.
Start your ad, article or follow-up message with a story
that someone can put their mind and heart into. It won't
look like the typical ho-hum message. Use the story to grab
attention. Stories can be good attention grabbers. Are you

Secret to longevity: Good genes, attitude

When Anna Johnson was born in November 1900, her future seemed
as bleak as the impending winter in her upstate New York home.
Anna Johnson, 104, lives at the Convalescent and Retirement
Center in the town of Orleans.

"They didn't expect me to live more than six months to a year,
" Johnson said. She said she had a tissue-wasting disease and
only one functioning kidney. When she was 5 years old, she
was so weak she had to be propped up for a photo.
What Johnson had on her side - besides devoted parents who
strengthened her on a diet of condensed milk and raw eggs -
were good genes.
Her mother made it to her late 90s, her sister, Laura, to age
94. An aunt lived to be 103.
And a younger brother, Herb Johnson, is 89.
"The old adage of old age running in families was pooh-poohed by
most scientists in our field for a very long time," said Thomas
Perls, M.D., director of the New England Centenarian Study and
author of "Living to 100."
But the most recent research on longevity shows that genes do
play a big role in who makes it to extreme old age.
"It really is very familial," said Perls, an associate professor
of medicine at Boston University Medical Center. The genetic
connection "actually does apply to average life expectancy."
A variation of a gene that decreases one's risk for cardiovascular
disease seems to play a role in helping a person reach 100,
Perls said.
But environmental factors - avoiding obesity and diabetes and
not smoking - help, too, he said.
Currently in the United States, about one person in 10,000 lives
to be 100, Perls said. He estimated there are about 650
centenarians among 6.3 million people living in Massachusetts.
In Third World countries ravaged by poverty, hunger and disease,
the centenarian rate is more like one in 100,000, Perls said.
For reasons not understood, the centenarian rate in Nova Scotia,
Sardinia and Okinawa is particularly high, about one in 5,000.
Perls divides centenarians into three categories: "delayers,"
who have no age-related illnesses until their 80s; "escapers,
" who have no illnesses at 100; and "survivors," who had
age-related illnesses prior to turning 80.
About 15 percent of centenarians are "escapers" and the
remainder are almost evenly divided into "delayers" and
"survivors."
"About 90 percent of the centenarians were functionally
independent at the average age of 92," Perls said. "They're
compressing the time they are not doing well in terms of
functional capacity until well into their 90s."
The great majority of centenarians - 85 percent - are women,
although centenarian men tend to be healthier than their
female peers.
It may not seem fair, but quite a few centenarians have a
history of not exercising, and a few centenarians in his
study smoke.
Anna Johnson's brother, Herb Johnson of Dennis, attests to the
fact his sister wasn't physically vigorous.
"She never did exercise a minute of her life," he said.
But Anna didn't have bad health habits, either.
"I never smoked," she said during an interview at the Orleans
Convalescent & Retirement Center where she now lives. "I never
drank until I was 100."
Anna's lawyer gave her a glass of champagne at her 100th
birthday party, and now it's an annual treat.
According to Perls, the oldest person ever was 122 years old.
Individuals of that age would be one in 6-1/2 billion people,
"incredibly rare," he said.
While he doesn't think it's possible that the average American
life span will one day be 100, he said people can take steps
to increase life expectancy from their late 70s to their 80s.
"We just have to have good health habits," Perls said. "If we
can make major dents in improving our behavior, a lot more
people would live to their mid- to late 80s and they
would be compressing the years that they are sick to the ends
of their lives."
