Oh yes, many of us do it. Generally speaking, it's human
nature to look at potential business contacts and compare
them to past experiences. Resist this instinct. You should
take each situation through single qualification steps,
until you know what is going on with them. Give each
"suspect" a fair chance to become a prospect. Every
prospect should have an equal chance to become a customer.
This will always require patience. At the least, practice
a partial suspension of quick judgment. Ask questions and
always give the benefit of the doubt. This can pay off when
you least expect it to work for you.
Business is NOT always Business as usual BUT....that crummy-
sounding-type, "suspect" OR prospect, might have his or her
name adorning a corporate jet! Be careful or you'll be
putting best selling book covers on your dusty shelf. Get a
mentor to HELP you.

Eating well helps ensure good health in old age

In just a few days we will turn the page into a new year,
and as we make our to-do lists, staying healthy should be
right up there for each and every one of us.
If concentrating on yourself gives you an odd feeling, just
remember that you keep in good health not only for yourself but
also for those who love you, and it also helps the nation as a
whole.
Eating well is a big part of what contributes to good health,
but it is also, as Juengst reminds us, "a social activity that
includes sharing, celebration, learning from one another and
providing for the helpless, a ritual that brings comfort,
satisfaction, pleasure, creativity, sustenance, nurture,
appreciation and healing." It thus satisfies many levels of our
human needs.
Eating well can bring us good health and improve the quality of
our lives in many ways. We know that certain foods and dietary
patterns help prevent, lessen the risk of and manage many
chronic diseases. This is especially true as we grow older.
There are also close relationships between food and the quality
of life, which are beginning to become more apparent all the
time. If we can maintain appropriate body weights throughout our
lives, it will go a long way toward helping us to have a stable
and well-functioning old age.
This means not too thin and not too fat. If we can delay
disability, we can often shorten the time during which we might
experience poor health before our deaths.
In midlife, controlling body weight and cardiovascular disease
risk factors, which are profoundly affected by our food patterns
and portion sizes, often leads to a better quality of life, both
physically and mentally. If we wait until we are old to take
hold of this monkey, it is not only a great deal harder to
manage but also often simply too late to really control.
Unfortunately, the science of nutrition did not have the place
it should have enjoyed in the scheme of helping to keep people
well and functioning until fairly recently. This is especially
true for the older people in our lives.
Eating well can have an effect on bodily pain, energy and
fatigue, social functioning, and mental health in later life,
and we need to be mindful of that right from the start. Fruits
and vegetables take close to center stage along with whole
grains, adequate protein, essential fats and reasonable portion
sizes. Eating well will help us control the problems associated
with chronic disease within the older community.
We are all aware that our health-care costs are increasing at a
rapid rate. These, along with the real burdens caused by chronic
disease and obesity, have brought us up short and made us
realize that nutrition is of vital importance to our aging
population. In 2000, the Institute of Medicine evaluated the
role of nutrition in maintaining good health in the Medicare
population. They concluded that poor nutrition, inadequate
intakes of nutrients and obesity are all major problems and that
a vast majority - 86 percent - of older Americans have chronic
conditions for which nutrition interventions have been shown to
improve health and the quality of life.
Nutrition therapy is now recommended in the management and
treatment of a number of common conditions, including high
cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart failure, diabetes and
kidney failure. The dietician has assumed a prominent place on
the health-care professional team and is the one most qualified
to provide medical nutrition therapy and individualized
nutrition services and procedures. These are now used and have
become important in treating illness and injury.
From time to time over the course of the year, my intention is
to bring you findings from some of the latest research on the
science of nutrition and its effect on our aging population.
Meanwhile, make every bite count.
Think when you eat, and remember, if you had known how
long you would be around, you would have taken extremely
good care of yourself.
